Tesla Earnings Plunge -2.8% as Margin Pressure Shocks Investors

Can Tesla’s upcoming earnings report revive its ambitious AI and Robotaxi narrative, or will mounting margin pressures trigger a deeper sell-off?

Will Tesla Earnings Revive the Autonomy Narrative?

Investors are hungry for clarity on artificial intelligence spending, humanoid robotics (Optimus), and full self-driving (FSD) technology. While bulls point to long-term optionality, the near-term financial reality remains challenging. Wall Street’s consensus for the upcoming Q2 Tesla Earnings stands at an adjusted EPS of $0.50 on revenue of $26.2 billion. However, a miss below these expectations could send shares toward the AI model fair value estimate of $346.

Bank of America maintains a Buy rating with an ambitious $460 price target, highlighting the expansion of the Robotaxi network into major cities like Miami, Dallas, and Houston. However, many investors remain skeptical about immediate monetization, particularly as crowd-sourced prediction markets assign low probabilities to an Optimus commercial release by the end of the year.

Is Margin Pressure Squeezing Tesla Profits?

In previous quarters, the automaker reported a recovery in automotive gross margins to 21.1%. However, critics point out that this improvement relied heavily on one-time warranty adjustments and tariff-related gains rather than sustainable pricing power. Regulatory credit revenue also slid significantly, and cheaper variants of the Model 3 and Model Y continue to squeeze average selling prices.

This margin squeeze comes at a time when competitive pressure is intensifying. Rivian is targeting the mass-market SUV segment with its new R2 model, while legacy automakers like General Motors and Ford Motor adjust their EV strategies. Furthermore, capital expenditures at Tesla surged over 67% year-over-year in Q1, raising concerns about negative free cash flow as the company heavily invests in data centers, AI infrastructure, and production facilities.

What About the Tesla Bitcoin Treasury?

Another key focal point for the upcoming Tesla Earnings report is the company’s corporate treasury, specifically its holdings of 11,509 Bitcoin. While companies like MicroStrategy have built their entire identity around cryptocurrency accumulation, Tesla treats digital assets strictly as a reserve. There is no evidence that the company bought or sold Bitcoin during the second quarter, but the official disclosure window will confirm whether the position remains unchanged.

An unchanged balance would reassure crypto markets that major corporations continue to view digital assets as a viable treasury reserve. Unlike other tech giants like Apple, which have steered clear of cryptocurrency, Tesla’s balance sheet decisions carry significant symbolic weight for the broader digital asset ecosystem.
