SK Hynix Correction: Why a Forward P/E of 8 Is a Shocking Steal

SKHY SK Hynix Inc.

Is the dramatic SK Hynix Correction a warning sign of a tech bubble, or the ultimate entry point for smart money?

What Caused the Dramatic SK Hynix Correction?

The sharp decline was not triggered by a sudden deterioration in microchip demand, but rather by a massive margin unwind in South Korea. Margin debt had surged 53.7% year-over-year to a record $1.42 trillion by May, setting up the global tech market for a rapid deleveraging event. When the tech sector experienced a minor pullback, it triggered immediate margin calls for over 12 million South Korean retail traders—representing more than 3% of the country’s entire adult population.

As South Korea’s most valuable company and a cornerstone of the global artificial intelligence trade, SK Hynix faced disproportionate selling pressure. This cascading effect was heavily amplified by newly launched leveraged ETFs. These funds are structurally forced to sell underlying shares to maintain fixed leverage ratios when prices fall. Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin criticized these leveraged products, labeling them a “gambling operation” that actively drives extreme market swings. This forced liquidation during the SK Hynix Correction dragged the stock far below its previous highs, creating a stark disconnect between its share price and actual business performance.

Are the Fundamentals of SK Hynix Still Intact?

While the stock price suffered, the company’s underlying financial health remains exceptionally robust. SK Hynix commands a dominant 58% share of the global high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market, comfortably leading competitors like Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology, which hold roughly 21% each. HBM is the essential hardware that powers NVIDIA‘s market-leading AI accelerators. The company’s partnership with NVIDIA is particularly lucrative, accounting for approximately 24% of its total 2025 sales, while the U.S. market now generates 65% of SK Hynix’s overall revenue.

Financially, the company is firing on all cylinders. Revenue nearly tripled year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026, supported by an astonishing 76.7% net profit margin. In the fiscal year 2025, the company posted a record $33 billion in operating profit on $65 billion in total revenue. Analysts at Goldman Sachs have repeatedly highlighted the structural advantages of HBM, noting that demand continues to outstrip supply. Currently, the stock trades at a forward P/E ratio of just 8 and a PEG ratio below 1, signaling deep undervaluation.

How Should Investors Trade SK Hynix Now?

Rather than attempting to perfectly time the bottom of the SK Hynix Correction, sophisticated market participants are utilizing options to capitalize on elevated implied volatility. With the put skew registering at highly elevated levels, some institutional traders are deploying January put ratio spreads—such as buying the 125 strike puts and selling twice as many 100 strike puts for a net credit. This strategy allows traders to short volatility and benefit as the market stabilizes.

For standard equity investors, simply accumulating shares during this period of forced selling offers an attractive risk-reward ratio. Historically, sharp margin-driven sell-offs are followed by rapid recoveries once the forced liquidation ends. The upcoming quarterly earnings report on July 29 is expected to serve as a major fundamental catalyst.
